Get your life in shape with Forbes Library!
Did you know that Forbes Library is offering free fitness classes and nutrition workshops? Thanks to a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the community of Northampton will be working on its fitness! The $5,000 grant, overseen by reference librarians Jen Ditkoff and Rick Hart, gives people access to free nutrition classes, fitness workshops, teen wii sports, pilates, functional training workouts, strength training and more!
Forbes Library was selected to receive the Health Access strand of the Equal Access grant, administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC). As part of the grant requirements, both Ditkoff and Hart participated this past spring in a professional development program in community-responsive librarianship developed by Libraries for the Future (LFF). LFF is a national non-profit organization whose purpose is to increase innovation and investment in 's libraries. Forbes Library designed a series of fitness and nutrition programs after polling the community to see what they would like for health programs. Partnering with local organizations, Forbes gives you an opportunity to get your life in shape!
It all started off with a workshop on how to start a fitness program, led by USA Triathlon coach and Certified Personal Trainer Martha Grinnell of Dynamic Training.
Upcoming February events include a nutritional workshop with local cookbook author Leslie Cerier on Saturday February 7th from 12:00 - 2:00, Teen Sports Gaming with Wii and Dance Dance Revolution on Wednesday February 11th and 25th from 3:30 - 5:00 and a fitness class with Pioneer Valley CrossFit on Saturday February 21st at 2:00.

Nikki Giovanni at STCC
On Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the gymnasium of Scibelli Hall, the College will welcome world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni.
This is the first program in a series of Diversity Speakers/Art events sponsored by the Diversity Council for the 2008-2009 season. This event is also being sponsored by: Mass Mutual, Mass Mutual Center, Baystate Health, Black Men of Greater Springfield, Springfield Health & Human Services, American International College, PeoplesBank, The Point of View, Unity First, Springfield College and WNEC.
Ms. Giovanni, who is one of the most widely read American poets, is considered a National Treasure. Oprah Winfrey recognizes Ms. Giovanni as one of Oprah's twenty-five Living Legends. Ms. Giovanni calls herself "a Black American, a daughter, a mother, and a professor of English". Her focus is on the individual, for she believes in the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus in the lives of others.
Ms. Giovanni has written 30 books for adults and children, some of which have been on the New York Times Bestseller list. Her most recent children's book, Rosa, illustrated by Bryan Collier (and which our library has, among other books of hers, in its children's collection,) was a Caldecott Medal Honors book and won the Coretta Scott King award. Common sense has it backwards: feelings don't cause behavior; they are the result of behavior. In fact, feelings are the way that we know about our own actions. Professor Laird will present research indicating that people's feelings can be changed by changing their behaviors. He will then discuss the implications for our view of human beings.

Reading for the Light ~ Worthington Library
Worthington Library recently hosted a very successful program series entitled “Reaching for the Light”. In a town where a quorum for a special town meeting is 21 people, we were thrilled to average 20 at each of the five sessions. For four weeks, a minister or spokesperson for a different spiritual path practiced in Worthington spoke about their spiritual practices. We had a Buddhist, a Sufi, a Christian and a Pagan. The last week, brought all of them together in a panel. The response was extremely favorable. Many folk would have liked for the discussions to continue and all learned a lot about the differences and similarities of these paths. SciFi Ghost Hunters Visit Clapp Memorial Library
The SciFi Channel TAPS Team (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) is currently investigating the Clapp Memorial Library for ghosts! Library Director, Owen Maloney, night custodian Jacques Benoit (who discovered the ghosts and alerted TAPS), and the TAPS Team spent last night investigating reported hauntings at this library. Later today, TAPS will meet with Owen and Jacques to report their findings which will be aired nationally at a later date.
