| The Novels
Formed in the summer of 2006, The Novels is comprised of four rather literary, book smart gentlemen who bring that "hey guys, let's GO!" attitude and spirit to their music. In response, their fans tend to smile. And dance. Often described as some sort of modern breed of "Anglophile power-pop", they draw comparison to beat groups of the 1960's including the Kinks and the Who and the janglier side of the Velvet Underground. The Novels and their previous and current side projects (Party Wolf, Bourgeois Heroes, Sitting Next to Brian and Runner & the Thermodynamics) have played throughout the United States and Canada. Their debut full-length album, "We're Very Paper Cliché," will be released later this fall. In the midst of all this music, Jason, one of the group's singers and guitar players, has been been checking out books to patrons and answering reference questions for the past nine years (almost a third of these years at the Forbes Library). School for the Dead
School for the Dead loves libraries. Their drummer, Brian, even spends his days delivering books all over Western Massachusetts. The music of School for the Dead is clear and literate with a focus on lyrics and message as well as melody and catchiness. Members of the band have been part of Northampton's rich music scene for many, many years. They've played in every venue in the area, as well as spots all over the country, and have been involved in dozens of albums. School for the Dead, lead by Henning Ohlenbusch, has just completed their second full-length CD entitled "A Telephone Built For Two". You can learn more and follow along with the band at The Living Rockumentary, their six-year-old comprehensive blog.
