There will be time for viewing the exhibits, library, and gift shop. Lunch will be immediately afterwards at Judy's in downtown Amherst. Birthday Bash and Children's Book Festival with Western Massachusetts Illustrators’ Guild

In honor of Eric Carle’s 80th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the Western Massachusetts Illustrators' Guild (WMIG), The Carle is hosting a day filled with book-signings, readings, and demonstrations by WMIG artists, hands-on activities in the Art Studio, and special performances by Smithsonian Folkways Children's music recording artist Elizabeth Mitchell. Complimenting the art in the galleries will be an exhibit of original art by some of New England’s favorite illustrators as well as an art sale, silent auction, and raffle.

Featured artists include: David Costello, Diane deGroat, Elizabeth Finney, Linda Graves, John Steven Gurney, Laura Jacques, Gary Lippincott, Jeff Mack, Bob Marstall, Shelley Rotner, Ruth Sanderson, Nicole Tadgell, and David White. Free Day for Librarians at the Eric Carle Museum

Take an opportunity to visit The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art during their Annual Librarians’ Open House with Jim Trelease on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. The Carle invites librarians to a day at the Museum. You'll receive free materials for your libraries and enjoy afternoon refreshments, and two presentations. PDP's are available.

Presented by Susan Bloom, Emeritus Director of the Center for The Study of Children’s Literature at Simmons College. In anticipation of the presentation of the 2007 Caldecott Medal awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children for the preceding year, Susan selects her favorites. In her presentation she shares with the audience what makes these particular books rise above the others. Focusing on illustrations and the interplay of words and pictures she shares her insights as to why she considers these books the “best of the best.” (2 Professional Development Points) Free with Museum Admission.

Information about Michael:

Michael Thompson, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, lecturer, consultant and former seventh grade teacher. He conducts workshops on the development of boys and social cruelty in childhood for both public and private schools across the United States. He is the author of Speaking of Boys and coauthor, with Dan Kindlon, Ph.D., of The New York Times bestseller Raising Cain. The father of a daughter and a son, he and his wife observe children’s friendships from their home in Arlington, Massachusetts.
